Khelo India University Games: Swimmers keep Jain University on top of medals table

The biggest upset of the day came in boxing with Muskan defeating the world youth champion Vinka in the women’s 57-60kg semi-finals.

Hosts Jain University, once again, rode on impressive performances by its swimmers to maintain its lead at the top of the Khelo India University Games 2021 medals table on Tuesday.

Jain University picked up four of the 10 gold medals on offer on Tuesday. Overall, eight new records were created on the day in Bengaluru.

The highlight of day 4, however, came in boxing when Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Shekhawati University’s Muskan beat youth world champion Vinka in the 57-60kg category semi-finals. Muskan won by split decision despite a late flurry by Vinka.

On the penultimate day of weightlifting, Savitribai Phule University asserted its dominance, winning two golds to take its tally to seven medals (two gold, one silver, four bronze) — the most by any University in the event.

Savitribai Phule University’s two gold medallists, Vaishnav Thakur (96kg class) and Chirag Waghavale (102kg class) also set new KIUG records in their respective categories.

Volleyball, making its debut at the Games, has been popular amongst spectators, and the final day for the event proved no different.

SRM University beat Bharathiar University in the women’s final to become the inaugural women’s volleyball champions at the Khelo India University Games.

Tamil Nadu’s SRM, who went unbeaten through the competition, are also the All India Inter-University volleyball champions.

In the men’s volleyball, SRM University upset the University of Calicut 3-0 in the final. The University of Calicut had won gold in the All India Inter-University in 2021, where SRM had finished with a bronze.

Panjab University, last edition’s top school, clawed their way back to fourth in the KIUG medals table, courtesy two golds in the shooting events. They won gold in the women’s 10m air rifle team. Arav Singh Dagar won the men’s individual trap.

The University of Mumbai completed a sweep in Mallakhamb, winning the women’s team event. Mallakhamb, an indigenous sport, has been introduced into the games for the first time.

There will be as many as sixteen medals up for grabs on Wednesday at the KIUG, nine of them in the pool. The day will also see the start of the archery competition and the finals of the badminton men’s and women’s team competitions.
