Bhubaneswar, 15 February 2022: After a bright start to their FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 campaign in Muscat, India Women’s Hockey Team will face off against Spain at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on February 26th and February 27th. Speaking on the upcoming challenges in store, India Women’s Hockey team Chief Coach Janneke Schopman pointed out Spain’s strengths.

“Spain is a very good team. They performed well at the Olympics and lost out in Shootouts to Great Britain. And they actually were the better team there, in my opinion. They are a very skilful team who like to move the ball well and create attacking opportunities. So, we have to be well prepared for the opposition and I am looking forward to the challenge,” Schopman said.

India picked up two wins against China in Muscat at FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22, defeating the Asian rivals 7-1 and 2-1. Speaking on the team’s performance so far in the tournament, Schopman said, “I am trying to focus on the way we want to play, how we want to attack, and how we want to look as a team. I think we made big steps In Muscat. It was a good experience in terms of our progress.”

With major events set to take place this year, Chief Coach Schopman also explained how playing in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 will help the team in preparing for the big events.

“The FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 will help us to fine tune our own game. What is most important is that we focus on ourselves, that we really know what we want to do, and how we want to do it. We have to tweak our tactics every time we play against different teams and we have to play to our strengths,” she said.

“The FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 will be perfect preparation for that. Because we will compete against all these different styles of play that will help us in different ways,” Schopman added.

India Women’s Hockey team will be returning to play at the Kalinga Stadium for the first time in two years, since the 2019 Women’s FIH Hockey Olympics Qualifiers against the USA.

“We are pretty excited to play in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 against good teams such as Spain. We started very well in Muscat against China, and now we are confident going into our matches against Spain. They are a very skillful team, in terms of attack and in defence. So, we are very eager to step up to the challenge,” Monika said.
